lady monsters

In this body of work, I created fantastical characters rooted in familiar ideas of femininity. To create these characters, I combined subconscious imagery with external references that include a variety of familiar archetypes, with a focus on Renaissance portraiture and decorative elements of historical dress.

These characters exist physically as nothing but delicately hand painted lace patterns. Although the lace itself is intended to simply please the eye, the characters’ faces and hands are deliberately inhuman and slightly creepy. This contrast communicates both positive and negative feelings I have about traditional notions of feminine beauty and ornamentation.
